To students interested in graduate research opportunities:

Headwater stream near CharlotteI am always looking for students interested in doing research on watershed processes, hydrogeology, and geomorphology. The next time I anticipate accepting any graduate students is Fall 2010. Take some time to review this website and then contact me via email: ajefferson at uncc dot edu.

In particular, please look at the list of current projects (some of which may have openings for future students). I am also interested in hearing from students with research interests in (1) the effects of urban development and stormwater practices on headwater stream temperatures, ecology, and biogeochemical cycling (in collaboration with Sandra Clinton and Sara McMillan); (2) modeling climate change effects at scales from headwater streams to large rivers; and (3) retropsective analyses of topographic and geologic controls on climate sensitivity of watersheds along the US Eastern Seaboard.

UNC Charlotte offers a number of graduate degree options for students interested in hydrology and geomorphology. The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences has an M.S. in Earth Sciences that is the appropriate degree for someone with a bachelor's degree in geology, earth science, physical geography, engineering, ecology, or a related field. Our M.S. program has a strong suite of classes that are suitable for students interested in applying their degree to jobs in environmental consulting or regulatory agencies or for students who intend to eventually pursue a Ph.D. Hydrology and hydrogeology classes include: Hydrologic Processes, Hydrogeology, Watershed Science, Watershed Analysis, Environmental Site Characterization, and Site Remediation. Geomorphology classes include: Geomorphology, Fluvial Processes, Soils, Applied Soil Science, Landscape Assessment and Paleoclimatology.

Our department also offers two Ph.D. programs. We offer a unique and interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems in cooperation with the Civil Engineering Department. This flexible program also students to focus on their specific research interests while also learning the tools to analyze environmental problems from multiple perspectives. We also have a Geography Ph.D. for students from a geography background who have interests in both the physical and social sides of the discipline. I'd be happy to discuss the two programs with you in more detail.

Applications for fall admission and consideration for financial support are due early in the year. Please consult the program web pages for specific dates. All programs support students through a combination of teaching assistantships (usually assisting with undergraduate labs) and research assistantships (on a faculty member's funded research). Spring admission is possible but it is unlikely to be accompanied by finanical assistance.

Charlotte is a vibrant, rapidly growing city with the full range recreational and cultural amenities. We are located in the gently rolling topography of the Piedmont region, three to four hours from the Atlantic beaches, and two hours from the Appalachian mountains. The weather here is nice all year round.
