Geographic Information Science and Technologies (GIScience &Technologies) at UNC Charlotte

Geographic Information Science and Technologies (GIScience and Technologies) is a rapidly evolving field that focuses on the development and use of theories, methods, technology, and data for analyzing geographic patterns and processes. With a twenty year history of research and teaching in the field, the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at UNC Charlotte offers programs with a wide range of cutting edge GIS courses and exciting research opportunities at the undergraduate, Master, and PhD levels. Our programs concentrate on providing students great opportunities to develop advanced technological skills and analytical problem-solving abilities. A variety of GIScience and Technologies issues are explored. These include methods for the collection and measurement of geospatial data, database management and programming, spatial analysis and modeling, geospatial visualization, spatial decision support systems, and the relevance and impact of GIScience and Technologies in society and the information age. With this knowledge and additional coursework opportunities in Geography and Earth Sciences, students are especially well positioned to effectively apply GIScience and Technologies to interdisciplinary problem solving and to specific fields of study such as urban planning, economic and location analysis, meteorology, landscape ecology and conservation, geomorphology, watershed hydrology, transportation studies, and crime analysis. Students may also gain further hands—on experience through research assistantships in the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science (CAGIS) and various faculty research projects.
