Meteorology

In our department, our undergraduate degrees which concern natural Earth systems are: Earth Sciences, Geology and Meteorology.

Do you like to watch the satellite and radar loops on TV showing where a storm is going and want to know why this is happening? Do you wonder how air quality forecasts are made, and what might happen if more folks carpooled? Are you interested in improving the understanding of and the prediction of tropical cyclones and severe thunderstorms? If so, UNC Charlotte has a degree program for you!

Our Bachelor of Science in Meteorology is the only such program within 100 miles of Charlotte. UNC Charlotte has developed a foundation of courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics and earth science, combined with meteorology courses, to prepare you for television and radio weathercasting, operational forecasting, or for research in the atmospheric sciences.

Extracurricular experiences are important components of the meteorology program at UNC Charlotte. Our students have held internships at local TV stations as well as with the REU program in Oklahoma. Our students are also involved in atmospheric research, in the subjects of air quality, severe thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, and numerical weather prediction. UNC Charlotte students participate in the WxCHALLENGE national collegiate forecasting contest. We also have our own student AMS chapter.

With a B.S. in Meteorology you might end up working for the National Weather Service, forecasting for a private company like an energy company or an airline, doing research at a laboratory like Savannah River National Lab, or you might go on to graduate school.

If you are interested Meteorology, talk to or take classes with professors like Dr. Martin, Dr. Etherton, Dr. Eastin, and Mr. Shirley.
